When Soy Supply Breaks: Why Algae Belongs in Your Protein Strategy

The EU's landmark deforestation regulation (EUDR) is scheduled to take effect on 30 December 2026 — and it is already reshaping one of the most critical protein supply chains in Europe. Washington has warned Brussels that without amendments, American soy exports to the EU could dry up. For livestock feed, aquaculture, food processing, and the pet food industry, that is not an abstract policy risk. It is a sourcing problem that needs a solution now.
What the EUDR means for protein supply
The EUDR requires importers of seven commodities — soy, cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber and timber — to prove that their supply chains are not linked to deforestation. For large and medium companies, compliance is mandatory from 30 December 2026. The US Department of Agriculture estimates the regulation could affect around €7.8 billion per year in US exports to the EU.
Soy is the central concern. European livestock producers rely heavily on imported soybean meal as a protein feed ingredient, and the EU simply does not produce enough domestically. If US exporters will be faced with costly traceability requirements and reluctant to share farm-level geolocation data with foreign authorities, the risk for scarcity is real. A structural protein gap opens up!
Algae: an underused lever in EU protein strategy
Europe has a growing algae production industry. Algae can offer something the EUDR problem makes newly urgent: a protein source that is domestically producible, free from the deforestation compliance burden, and already under active development for food, feed, and industrial applications. Algae can be farmed in the EU at large scale. Research shows that the yield per ha is higher than any other crop.
Microalgae such as Chlorella, Spirulina, and Nannochloropsis can achieve protein contents of 50–70% of dry weight. Certain macroalgae are also being developed as feed-grade protein ingredients.
Crucially, several European producers are already operating at commercial or near-commercial scale, and the regulatory framework for algae in feed and food is advancing through the Novel Food and feed authorisation routes.
But adoption has been slow not because the biology doesn't work, but because industry buyers and the algae supply side have not yet built the bridges needed: shared specifications, consistent supply volumes, scalable production agreements, and aligned pricing. That is the gap.
One fits all?
Livestock feed compounders are the most immediate risk category their soy dependency is direct and high-volume. But aquaculture feed producers, pet food manufacturers, and food ingredient companies using soy-derived protein isolates are in similar positions.
Each of these industries has different quality, volume requirements, regulatory constraints, and supply needs. This means a single algae solution does not fit all of them.
The question is not just 'can algae replace soy?' but 'which algae species, produced where, to which specification, and by whom?' Those are engineering and sourcing questions as much as scientific ones.
