Uncorking Sustainability: How Microalgae and Wetlands Can Reduce the Wine Industry's Carbon Footprint

The study identifies the main contributors to the carbon footprint of wine production as viticulture (27%), winemaking (23%), and wine bottling (50%), with the combined impact of winemaking and bottling accounting for 85% of the total carbon footprint of a wine bottle. Constructed wetlands and Phycosol, a type of microalgae, contribute to reducing carbon emissions in wineries by transforming wastewater into valuable products like biofertilisers, thereby utilizing an often overlooked resource loop to significantly lower CO2 emissions. The study emphasizes the significance of adopting a more holistic approach to assessing the environmental impact of wineries, arguing that traditional assessment methods often underestimate total greenhouse gas emissions by neglecting factors such as CO2 from fermentation, wastewater, and soil carbon fluxes, which are crucial for achieving comprehensive sustainability goals in the wine industry.
